Revolutionizing Healthcare: Tele-Robot with 'Touch' Abilities.
A Finnish hospital pilot has introduced a groundbreaking telerobot called Välkky, developed by Touchlab, that allows clinicians to remotely "feel" patients using advanced electronic skin (e-skin) technology. Controlled by operators wearing electronic haptic gloves, the robot transfers tactile sensations such as pressure, vibration, and motion from its robotic hand to the users. The three-month pilot, conducted at Laakso Hospital in Helsinki, aims to explore how robotics systems can assist in care delivery, reduce workload, and minimize the spread of infections. The technology has the potential to complement existing staff by performing clinical duties like measuring vital signs and providing patient support, thereby freeing up personnel for more complex tasks. The telerobot's applications extend beyond healthcare and could be utilized in industries like nuclear decommissioning and toxic waste handling. Touchlab, an Edinburgh-based startup, is a tenant of the National Robotarium, a state-of-the-art research facility focused on robotics and AI. The project is part of the Data-Driven Innovation initiative, supported by the UK and Scottish governments, to promote technological advancements in Edinburgh.
